Classification of Matter

In order to properly identify matter, there are a series of questions you have to go through.
This flowchart is very helpful in properly identifying matter as heterogenous, a homogenous mixture, a compound or an element.
Matter can go through different changes which can be identified as a physical or chemical change. With a physical change, the identity of the substance is the same but the state the substance is in changes. In the case of a chemical change, however, the change results in a different substance than the original. We also learned three techniques for separating substances: filtration, distillation, and chromatography. Filtration is used for the separation of solid substances, distillation is used for substances with different boiling points, and chromatography is used for liquids with a difference in polarity.

I found these links helpful for classifying matter:

  1. I found the description of the three separation techniques very helpful, and will be a good review for the test. Overall, I think this post was helpful to look over as a reference to matter as you went into depth describing the changes.

  2. Thank you Erin for sharing all of this! I found your separation methods extremely helpful and they and your descriptions will without a doubt stick in my mind for the test. I think this post was great to see for many of the topics, but you could add some more detail to things such as the flow chart, where you could walk though the steps or show a picture of them. Overall though I found this a very helpful post!

  3. I think you did a good of explaining everything outlined in the classification of matter which is going to be a necessary concept for the test. The explanation of chromatography in particular, helped me because it was something I had forgotten from the notes. Overall this post was very helpful, thanks.

  4. Your post was very helpful and I liked your definitions. You did a very good job explaining the concepts and making it easy for others to understand. One thing I would have liked to see was pictures so a ready can see what your talking about and easier grasp it.
